Touch controls that actually feel good

May 5, 2026 · Marek Dvořák

Good touch controls are invisible. You stop thinking about them within minutes. Bad ones make you aware of every tap, and no amount of great art fixes that feeling.

The best mobile games give you options. Tilt, virtual stick, on-screen buttons, one-touch — the more choices, the better, because thumbs and hands differ wildly. We always test a game with its defaults first, then check whether the alternatives are worth switching to.

Button placement matters more than button count. If I have to shift my grip to reach an action, that action will be late in the heat of the moment. Games that let you reposition buttons win big points from us.

One underrated feature is haptic feedback done right. A tiny buzz on a successful action tells your thumb what your eyes might have missed. When it's tuned well it's magic; when it's overused it just drains battery and annoys.
